Apumayo Expediciones has been acting as Tomas’s godfather since 2015. He and his siblings live at Sol y Luna Home Shelter and study at Sol y Luna School, located in Urubamba, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Due to the strong economic crisis tourism in Peru is facing because of the pandemic, Apumayo Expediciones is no longer able to keep on financing his education in a direct way and we are organizing a fundraising campaign to cover expenses related to Tomas´s education and basic needs.
Do you want to know more about Tomas?
Tomas tells us:
“I was born on October 5th, 2001, I live at Sol y Luna Home Shelter and study 5th grade at Sol y Luna School.”
“I used to live with my mother and my siblings at my home in Yanahuara. My father abandoned us a long time ago. But in 2017, three of my five siblings and I were transferred to the Rainbow Home Shelter because of family problems. I have paralysis of neck, mouth, and tongue, but that doesn’t diminish my will to learn”.
Tomas is one of the most cheerful students at Sol y Luna School. Despite his speech difficulties and family problems, his good spirits have made him very much loved and appreciated by the institution.
In March 2017, Tomas and his siblings were abandoned at their home by their mother. When this happened, the kids, who were underage, were left with an uncle who showed totally inappropriate behavior and in a place with neither food nor basic services.
For this reason, the Sol y Luna Association took over the case and transferred them to the Rainbow Home Shelter. There, Tomas lived with his brothers Mateo (14), Hyoslhim (12), and Eydan (9). In this shelter, Tomas had exemplary behavior by being very supportive and helping with the kitchen and with the household cleaning tasks.
Currently, Tomas and his brothers live at Sol y Luna Home Shelter and receive a good education with high-quality human values, healthy nutrition, psychological support, medical check-ups, and dental consultations. This institution covers all their needs, such as clothing, footwear, personal hygiene kits, as well as the affection which naturally has a very positive impact on Tomas and his brothers.
As a child, Tomas survived a fire in his home produced
by the flames of a wood stove. This accident left him with burns and difficulty walking.
However, through exercise and the support of their peers,
mainly from his best friend Thomas Schilter, Tomas is gradually overcoming this condition. He has been able to take long leisure hikes around the valley and has even learned to climb with ropes.

Since 2015, Apumayo Expediciones has been covering the cost of Tomas’s studies, and this year we have covered the first annual fee, however, we still feel a moral obligation to continue supporting him. The year 2020 hit the tourism sector very hard and our organization income has been very limited, so this is why we are asking for your collaboration to achieve the following objectives:
We have been able to contribute the first installment of S /. 3,300 soles and now we are looking for someone who can support us with the next semester in April, then July and October (each of S /. 3,300 soles).
At Apumayo Expediciones, we strongly believe Tomas is worth all our efforts, love and kind support.
